Fondy Gets Ready for Arrowhead!

The Fond du Lac football team continues to prepare for Saturday's WIAA State Quarterfinal matchup with Hartland Arrowhead at Fruth Field. The game kicksoff at 4pm and you'll hear all the action on News-Talk 1450 KFIZ. Coverage will begin after our Badger football broadcast is over, which should be right around 3:15pm or so. Just a note, the first 1000 fans to Fruth Field will get a "Touchdown Towel" for the game, so be sure to get there early the weather should be nice.

Here are some quick preview of some game notes that you'll hear on our radio broadcas on Saturday.

1. If you didn't already know, Arrowhead is one of the state high school football powers. When you mention high school football in Wisconsin, people bring up DC Everest, Oak Creek, and Hartland Arrowhead. The Warkhawks have played in the Division One State Championship Game at Camp Randall 6 of the last 13 seasons. They won titles in 1993, 94 & 96. They were state runnerups in 2000, 2002, and 2003.

2. Wednesday's practice was the first November football practice for any of the Fondy Cardinal players. As they walked into the locker room a few of the guys on the team told me that they were happy to be practicing with the snow flakes falling, which only happens when you make a deep run into the playoffs.

3. Also, if you see Fondy offensive players not wanting to get tackled it probably came from their practices. You see, there have been thousands of geese that have made their practice field and other fields around Fond du Lac High School their home on their way south for the winter. Lots of geese, mean...lots of er...goose droppings. Who'd want to get tackled on that! At least they will have the greenest practice field on the state next year!

4. No tape trade for the Cards and Warhawks. Usually when teams meet up in the playoffs, one of coaches for each team will meet somewhere to exchange some game tape of previous games. It one of those things that is always done. Not this week though. Coach Tom Taraska never called coach Kozaczuk to set up a trade so Fondy is working off of their own tape they made of Arrowhead's game with Hartford last week. As I told coach, I bet Coach Taraska had no need to set up a tape trade because he's probably got Fondy game tapes from a few games already this season. In the past, I've been told that Coach Taraska has been able to send scouts out to numerous games all through out the state during the regular season filming teams he may see in the playoffs. I give him a lot of credit for having such support in his program to be able to do that. I guess 6 appearances at Camp Randall in the last 13 years shows you his program is doing things right.

5. Also, Coach Koz told me something interesting about last week's winning touchdown pass last week by Ben Anderson against Mukwonago. In something similar to the movie Hoosiers when the players told Coach Norman Dale that they wanted to Jimmy Chitwood to take the final shot. Remember the line by Jimmy..."I'll Make It." Well...The Fondy players told Coach Koz that they wanted to run that waggle play that has been open all year...but they wanted to run it to the left...rather than the right, which we have seen numerous times. Ben Anderson throws the ball as well as anyone across his body. That is not easy.

OK..those are some quick hits for the game on Saturday. Please stop by and say hi before the game if you get there early enough. I'll be up on the press box in the KFIZ Booth. Let me know what you think of my high school blogs.

Thanks and we'll see you at the game!
