NORTHWEST-JOB CUTS
Northwest to cut 2,500 jobs
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Another airline is planning to trim jobs and
charge more in fees to try to make up for high fuel prices.
Northwest Airlines says it will cut 2,500 jobs and will begin
charging $15 to check a single piece of luggage. It will charge as
much as $100 to redeem a frequent-flier award ticket.
The airline said it expects the new fees to add up to 300
million dollars a year in revenue.
Northwest said the job cuts - which represent about 8 percent of
its work force - will include front-line and management workers. It
said it will start with voluntary departures and leaving open jobs
unfilled before moving to furloughs to reach the 2,500 total.

STEVE & BARRY'S-BANKRUPTCY
Clothing chain seeks Chapter 11 protection
NEW YORK (AP) - Steve & Barry's made a name for itself by
selling low-priced clothing. As it turns out, they may have been
too low.
The operator of a chain of 276 stores in 39 states has filed for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It's also revealed that it's
considering a plan to sell all or some of its assets to repay
outstanding debt, and was eliminating 172 corporate and field staff
positions immediately.
The New York-based retailer made a splash with merchandising
endorsements with actress Sarah Jessica Parker and other
celebrities.
It joins home furnishings chain Linen 'n Things, catalog
retailer Lillian Vernon and specialty retailer Sharper Image in
filing for bankruptcy protection this year.
Steve & Barry's officials blamed a cash crunch as a result of
tighter credit markets and sluggish economic conditions. That hurt
its plans to open stores and its ability to borrow money.
The retailer was founded in 1985. Its success was built on
selling $10 fashions while keeping costs low by using virtually no
advertising, manufacturing its own clothes and selling in large
volume.
