Breakfast Club - Show #3 - 4/14/08

Hey it's Monday....I bet your happy to get another work week going. As always, look for the latest news, weather, and sports at KFIZ.com. Here are other highlights from today's show on News-Talk 1450 KFIZ.

6:18am: Karl Klopotic's weather forecast says Sunny today with a high of 51. Look for 64 on Tuesday and 70 on Wednesday!

6:25am: Entertainment News....Prom Night was #1 at the box office this weekend pulling in $22 million dollars...More than 300 people attended the funeral of Charlton Heston on Saturday in Los Angeles...Bryant Gumbel is out as the play by play guy at the NFL Network for their game telecasts.

6:40am: Opening up the History Vault...In 1828 the first Webster's Dicitionary was published...In 1865 President Abe Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth while he sat at Ford's Theater in Washington, DC...In 1912 the Titanic hit an iceberg and began to sink.

Here are some Titanic facts....the boat was 882 feet long and weighed over 52,000 tons...There were more than 2200 people on board when it sank...The Titanic passenger list included some of the world's most prominent people including Macy's owner Isidor Straus, and millionaire JOhn Jacob Astor, the Fourth...Over 1,500 people died in the accident, most from hypothermia from the 28-degree waters.

6:45am: One sports note...The Fox Valley Association Boys Basketball All-Star Game was held at Kaukauna on Sunday night. The South beat the North 112-109 in overtime. Oshkosh West's John Benkoske led all scorers with 23 points. Fondy's Eddie Gilgenbach added 22 while Sam Munso added 11 for the South. Munson also won the slam dunk contest.

6:50am: KFIZ News Quiz Winner: Bonnie Engel of Mt. Calvary correctly knew that a conservation meeting was being held at Theisen Middle School in Fond du Lac.

7:20am: Taxes are due on Tuesday, but April 23rd is "Tax Freedom Day" for Americans. That's the day that the average person in the United States has worked enough days to pay their federal, state, and local taxes. That day comes three days earlier in 2008 than in 2007. Americans work 113 days to pay their taxes for the year, compared to 35 days for a years worth of food, 13 days for clothes, and 60 days for housing.

7:25am: Birthday Time...Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar is 31...Actor Anthony Michael Hall is 40....Baseball Hit King Pete Rose is 67 and the great Loretta Lynn is 73.

7:55am: The Spokane, Washington police department has been getting weird calls to their crime tip line. Some recent calls have included someone wondering how to thaw a 12 pound turkey, how to remove a big claw foot bathtub from a home and if businesses are open on certain holidays. KFIZ Newsman Bob Nelson will check in with our local law enforcement to see if they've had any calls from people looking for odd things on our local tip line.

8:20am: Kay from the Volunteer Center of Fond du Lac County stopped by for her weekly chat. April is Youth Services Month and youth from the Fond du Lac are getting out and helping the community on April 18th. Laconia and Ripon also will have events later in the month. Adult volunteers are still in need from some of these events so you are asked to contact the Volunteer Center if you can pitch in.

The 3rd annual Human Race is set for Saturday, May 31st. Its a way for any local organization to race funds without having to actually organize the event yourself. For more informaton on the Human Race, which takes place in Downtown Fond du Lac you are asked to contact the Volunteer Center. The phone number is 926-1414. 8:50am: If you are a golfer...how does it make you feel that 85-year old Robert Dunham got one in Arizona recently. Robert is blind! Good for him. I can't hit the green with two good eyes. Robert has someone line him up by the ball and aim him in the right direction and he swings away.

Also Gary Ebertz and Janice Paar both won a WWE Backlash PPV from Charter Communications and also qualified to win a digital camera from Charter and the WWE.

Dottie and Judy joined me from the Fond du Lac Senior Center. If you are interested in any of the trips, programs, or other events they talked about call the Senior Center at 322-3630. They are 33 members short of 2000 for the year. Also give them a call for more info on joining!
