largest retailer is getting a makeover.
A Wal-Mart Stores spokesman says the company will begin
replacing logos on the front of its U.S. stores with a new design
beginning this fall. He says the change would reflect changes
customers already have seen in some store signs and advertisements,
but he didn't elaborate.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the new look would include
eliminating the hyphen in the company's name, now shown as a star

County sheriff's deputies finally convinced workers at the station
to close after traffic was jammed by drivers looking for a bargain.
Tiffany Smith waited in line for two hours to buy the cheap gas.
She says she's been faced with the tough choice of having to buy
gas or food for her family. A clerk at the Marathon station tells a
local TV station (WKRC) he didn't know how to fix the price on the
pumps.

NEW INTERNET NAMES
Panel explores sweeping new domain rules
NEW YORK (AP) - The Internet's key oversight agency is
considering the first sweeping changes in the network's addressing
system since its creation 25 years ago.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is
meeting in Paris. Today, it is to consider proposals for
streamlining new domain name suffixes.
The new guidelines could lead to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of
Internet addresses to join ".com,". They could include ".lat"
for Latin America and a Bulgarian moniker in the Cyrillic script.
New names won't start appearing for at least several months, and
ICANN won't be deciding on specific ones quite yet.
Demand for change has been rising around the world as Internet
usage expands to people who cannot speak English or easily type
English characters.

HEALTHCARE COSTS
Study: Health costs to rise nearly 10 percent
NEW YORK (AP) - Employer health care costs are poised to rise
almost 10 percent this year and nearly that much again in 2009
according to an industry report released today. That's more than
double the annual inflation rate.
The study by PriceWaterhouseCoopers predicts that medical costs
will increase 9.9 percent in 2008 and an additional 9.6 percent in
2009.
The head of the PriceWaterhouseCoopers Health Research Institute
says "Health care providers, insurers and employers will have to
monitor medical costs carefully if we are to avoid a resurgence of
the double-digit annual increases seen in the past."
The report identifies a hospital building boom and the expenses
insured people are paying for the uninsured as two factors driving
the increase.

POSTAL-PETROL
Post office paying millions more for every gas increase
WASHINGTON (AP) - Americans with just one or two cars feel the
pinch every time gas prices go up.
But imagine what the impact would be if you owned 215,000
vehicles.
The Postal Service does. And every time the price of gas goes up
a penny, it costs the post office 8 million dollars.
In 2007, transportation cost the Postal Service 6.5 billion
dollars. That's a half billion more than it cost in 2006.
In addition to filling up its own delivery vehicles, the post
office faces rising costs for fuel from its contract carriers,
including airlines and truckers.
And it's hard to keep up -- when postal rate increases are
legally limited to the rate of inflation.
Deputy Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe says, "We are
definitely feeling the pressure."

MEXICAN GAS
Some motorists drive to Mexico to fill up cheaply
SAN DIEGO (AP) - A gallon of regular gasoline in San Diego costs
an average of $4.61. A few miles south, in Tijuana, Mexico, it's
about $2.54. And the price is even less if you pay in pesos. Gas is
cheaper in Mexico because of a government subsidy.
Some motorists seem to be willing to cross the border to take
advantage of the lower prices. One California man who works in
contruction in San Diego says he goes to Tijuana every week to
refuel his dual-cab Ford pickup. He says he fills it with diesel
for $60 -- and it would cost nearly twice as much in San Diego.

7:18am:

WASHINGTON (AP) - The government says a peak in gasoline prices
may be in sight. But it also says, don't look for the bottom to
fall out of high prices, either.
The Energy Department says gas should top at $4.15 a gallon this
summer. It looks for prices at the pump to remain above $4 a gallon
most of year.
Energy Information Administration chief Guy Caruso told a House
panel that crude prices are expected to average $126 a barrel in
2009, or $4 a barrel higher than this year because supplies and
demand will remain tight.
Other experts told the panel that people shouldn't expect any
quick fixes to the nation's energy problems.

DETROIT (AP) - Some auto industry analysts are declaring the
midsize SUV extinct.
Thanks to sky-high gasoline prices, one expert says, "They're
dinosaurs. Put a fork in them."
For the first five months of this year, Autodata Corporation
says sales of midsize SUVs like the Ford Explorer and Chevrolet
TrailBlazer were down 24 percent compared to the same period last
year. In May alone, they tumbled 38 percent.
People are turning to crossover vehicles like the Ford Edge or
Buick Enclave, which give much the same performance but are built
on car rather than truck frames. That makes them stingier with gas.
Will SUVs wither away altogether? Automakers are emphasizing
them less, but think large families and people who tow boats and
campers will still want them.

RATING EMPLOYERS
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Would you be make more working somewhere
else? Now, you can peer over to the other side of cubicle. A new
Web site called Glassdoor.com is revealing salary info from
hundreds of major employers. The site also posts anonymous reviews
written by current and past workers. Glassdoor CEO Robert Hohman
says they believe it's "super important" to help people find jobs
"where they can go home happy at the end of the day." While
access to the site is free, there is a catch. To see the juiciest
info, users have post their own salaries and feelings about their
bosses.

They changed their name to the Astros in 1965 to honor the area profile of leading the world in Space Exploration and the building of the Houston Astrodome.

7:50am: A guy in Iowa was arrested for DUI for riding on a motorized cooler that had about a dozen beers still inside. The contraption went no more than 13 mph but he refused a breath test when confronted by officers and was arrested.

8:04am:

ATLANTA (AP) - The government says Americans' life expectancy
has surpassed 78 years.
While that is a record, the U.S. still lags behind 30 other
countries in longevity. Japan tops the list, with children born in
2006 expected to live until they are 83.
The government says the increase in life span is due to falling
mortality rates for most leading causes of death.
University of Pennsylvania demographer Samuel Preston says U.S.
life expectancy may not look all that great when compared with
other nations, but he says the increase could be a sign that the
country might "be in the process of catching up."
Life expectancy is up for both men and women, and whites and
blacks. White women are expected to live to be 81. They are
followed by black women, white men and finally black men, who are
expected to live to 70.

NEW YORK (AP) - A number of major airlines have rolled back a
weekend fare increase. It marks first time in more than half a
dozen attempts that a widespread price hike failed to take hold
across the struggling industry.
One industry observer says the moves may reflect softening
demand among consumers.
The carriers themselves, however, declined to say whether the
shift signals concern about customer demand.
American Airlines launched the $20 roundtrip increases across
much of its domestic network Saturday. That move was quickly
matched by many of its closest competitors, including United
Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
Continental Airlines was among the carriers that matched the
increase over the weekend, but it rolled back the higher prices
Monday, putting pressure on other carriers to do the same.
Airlines have been scrambling to cut costs and increase revenue
as jet fuel prices have soared by about 77 percent more than it did
a year ago.

He then decided to install security cameras that he could view from his cell phone and witnessed images of a woman walking around his home while he was not there. After summoning police, they were able to find a woman hiding in the top of a built-in cupboard used to store bedding. The woman told police that she had nowhere to live and moved in one day when the owner was gone and had left the door unlocked. She did not take anything other than food, but did use the shower and toilet. She now faces a charge of trespassing.

GAS PRICES-STRANDED MOTORISTS
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - With gas prices hovering at $4 a gallon,
some motorists are putting less fuel in their tanks and then coming
up empty on the highway. National statistics on out-of-gas motorists don't exist. But
there's plenty of anecdotal evidence that drivers who are unwilling
or unable to fill 'er up are gambling by keeping their tanks
extremely low on fuel. AAA Mid-Atlantic, which serves Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, Virginia and the District of Columbia, reports a 15
percent year-over-year increase in calls from members with empty
tanks. AAA spokeswoman Catherine Rossi says motorists could end up
paying more later. That's because running on fumes can damage a
car's fuel pump -- requiring repairs that make a full tank of $4
gas seem like a bargain.
