7:25am: Celeb Birthdays: Actress Jessica Alba is 27...Actress Kari Wuhrer is 41..Jay Leno is 58...Actress Ann Margeret is 67.

7:50am: NFL Draft talk here. I think Ted Thompson did a great job this weekend at the draft. Granted I was surprised with a wide receiver with their first pick of the draft, but Jordy Nelson is a big tough guy that Green Bay might not have in their "fab five" group of receivers last year. I love Thompson taking Brian Brohm in the 2nd and Matt Flynn at QB in the 7th. These guys should nice additions behind Aaron Rodgers. If the team does sign a veteran, Flynn could get stashed on the practice squad. I like the DB Lee, and the tight end out of Texas should be a nice compliment to Donald Lee and the two linemen will add depth up front.

8:20am: Kay from the Volunteer Center of Fond du Lac County stopped by for her weekly chat. Today is the last day to buy tickets for The Cheers For Volunteers Awards Banquet which is on May 1st at the Ramada Plaza Hotel. Cocktails are at 5:30pm/Dinner at 6:30pm. Tickets are $25. Another WR in Round 7

With the 2nd of 3 seventh round draft picks...Green Bay selected wide receiver Brett Swain out of San Diego State.

He's 6'1 and weighs 200 pounds.

Another QB in Round 7

The Packers are now set at QB for 2008 after taking LSU's Matt Flynn in the 7th round. With two young guns behind Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay should be good to go into the year with two rooks behind the first year starter. If they would ink a veteran, Flynn could maybe be stashed on the practice squad, or have him come up with an "injury" in camp and hide him on IR..

from packers.com

CAREER NOTES: Flynn's 2,407 yards passing in 2007 rank seventh on the school's season-record list...His 202 pass completions in 2007 rank fifth on LSU's annual record chart...Only Rohan Davey (367 in 2001) attempted more passes in a season than Flynn's 2007 total of 359...His 21 TD passes in 2007 rank fourth on the Tigers' season-record list...His average of 200.6 yards per game passing as a senior ranks tenth on the school's annual record chart...Flynn came off the bench to throw three touchdowns in the fourth quarter of the 2005 North Texas game, becoming the first non-starter in school history to accomplish that feat in one quarter...He produced at least three touchdown passes in five of his final six games with the Tigers... ...The Green Bay Packers select another tackle. He is Breno Giacomini. He's 6'7 and 300 pounds.

From packers.com

CAREER NOTES: Giacomini is a product of the Louisville training room, having grown from a 242-pound tight end in 2004 to a 303-pound offensive tackle in 2007. 2007

SEASON: All-Big East Conference second-team choice by The NFL Draft Report...Ranked second on the team with an 80.75% blocking consistency grade, recording 78 knockdowns and ten touchdown-resulting blocks while starting all twelve games at right tackle...Allowed four sacks and two pressures on 491 pass plays, helping the offense average 488.0 yards per game, including 341.9 yards passing.

Trade Down Again

Ted Thompson trades down from 137 with the Vikes for #150 in the 5th and 209 in the 7th as the team stockpiles late round picks. The Vikes take QB John David Booty out of USC. Pack trades and improves a team in the division.

Packers Grab A Tackle

With the 135th overall pick and the final pick of the 4th round, the Green Bay Packers selected tackle Josh Sitton out of Central Florida. He's 6'3 and weighs 320 pounds.
He was a three year starter at UCF.

First Badger Drafted

The Philadelphia Eagles took the first Wisconsin Badger today by scooping up CB Jack Ikegwuonu. Some thought Ike wouldn't get drafted because of the major knee injury that he suffered but he was taken in the 4th round with the 131st pick. Ikegwuonu will miss the 2008 season as he recovers.

In the 4th Round at #128....

...The Packers trade down again..sending a 4th round pick at #128 to St. Louis for Pick #137 in the 5th round and #217 in the 7th round.

Packers Trade Up....

Green Bay has made another pick...as they trade up to #102 and select defensive end Jeremy Thompson out of Wake Forest. Green Bay gave the Jets their 113th pick in the 4th round and their 5th round pick, which was at #162 to slide up and get Thompson. He's 6'4, and 264 pounds. Some scouts have him tabbed as a linebacker. We'll have to wait and see what the Packers have in store for him.
He is the brother of Packers offensive tackle Orrin Thompson.
From packers.com

Packers 3rd Round Pick Highlight Video

The Green Bay Packers have made their pick in the 3rd at #91 Ted Thompson fills a need by taking tight end Jermichael Finley out of Texas. The 6'4, 243 pounder should be a nice compliment to Donald Lee at tight end.

Mike McCarthy on Day 1 of the Draft

...Aaron Rodgers is the teams starter and he knows that he is the team's starter and Brohm is coming in as a backup.

...He likes Brohm because he's consistant and will fit into the system well, and he's very polished and can run any set.

...Nelson's virsatility set him apart of the other receivers on the board when they took him at #36 and he'll contribute on special teams.

...He says time will tell if any of the three first day picks can contribute because of the talent ahead of them at their positions, but they fit and will have the opportunity to contribute.

...Patrick Lee will play corner and nickel and he likes his size and aggressiveness and he fits the Packers style of play.

...Nelson will give them a big body-type receiver, but his current crop of receivers are not small.

...He's not sure if the team will have a veteran QB in when Training Camp starts but time will tell.

...They always go by best available player first when they draft, but they do pay attention to both and its a chess match to get the guy in the right spot.

..He liked the new draft structure where the time is shorter between picks and just two rounds on day 1.

....Its good to find a guy like Patrick Lee that fits so well and knows the Packers basic system because he played it in college.

Ted Thompson Reviews Day 1 of the Draft

Ted Thompson met the media after the Packers made three selections on Friday. Here are some highlights of what he had to say.

...He didn't think Brohm would be there at pick #56.

...He felt that Brohm dropped because his senior year wasn't as good as his junior year, but that could be because of the coaching change.
...The Aaron Rodgers is a pro and it won't bother him that they took a QB in the 2nd round.

...He says there was no need to call Rodgers and explain the pick.

...at 30 he says they traded back because the draft board was still strong and they were able to get another player at #36 and add a pick.

...he wasn't sure if the Jets called them or they called the Jets, but the got the deal done.

...he says that they were trying to trade up in the 2nd round to get Brohm, but couldn't find any takers, but got him anyway.

...CB Patrick Lee is a good player is a tough guy that likes to play bump and run and will fit in nice to the Packer defense and they didn't think he'd be there at 60.

...He says Jordy Nelson can come in and make an impact, even if the Packers have 5 good guys at receiver.
...He had his eye on Nelson and that he doesn't drop many passes.

...Nelson is similar to Koren Robinson body-style and receiving skills and the fans will like him.

....Ted says he got boo'd again when he addressed the fans in the Lambeau Field Atrium.

...He says that Lee wasn't a late bloomer and started just his senior year, but was a good nickel back before that earlier in his career in a good program.

....He says they liked both Brohm and Michigan's Chad Henne but they liked Brohm just a bit better.

....Brohm has a shot at being the Packers #2 QB in 2008 because he's a good football player that has grown up in the game.

Packers 2nd Round Pick Brian Brohm

Here's some highlights of Packer 2nd round pick Brian Brohm.

Jordy Nelson Highlight Video

Here are some highlights of Packers 2nd round Pick Jordy Nelson

Pack Grabs Corner at #60

Ted Thompson took a corner with pick #60 in the 2nd round in cornerback Patrick Lee out of Auburn. The, 6'0, 200 pounder didn't become a fulltime starter until his senior year at Auburn. He was a 2nd team All-SEC pick last season. He can also play special teams as he returned kicks this past season.

Overall, my initial gut, likes the first three picks for the Packers today.

Notes from packers.com

CAREER NOTES: Lee averaged 25.82 yards on kickoff returns in 2007, the sixth-best season average in school history, topped by David Langner (28.28 avg in 1972), Rick Neel (28.12 avg in 1975), James Brooks (27.48 avg in 1979), Tristan Davis (27.0 avg in 2006) and Mike Fuller (26.25 avg in 1973). 2007

SEASON: Named the team's Most Improved Linebacker/Defensive Back by the coaching staff, adding second-team All-Southeastern Conference honors from Rivals.com...Ranked sixth in the SEC with four interceptions for 34 yards in returns, adding ten pass deflections while starting all thirteen games at right cornerback...Ranked sixth on the squad with a career-high 55 tackles (40 solos), adding one stop for a 4-yard loss...Also caused one fumble...Returned eleven kickoffs for 284 yards (25.8 avg).

Packers Take A QB

The Green Bay Packers selected Louisville QB Brian Brohm with their 2nd round pick (56th) overall. Some may scratch there head at this one since they have said Aaron Rodgers is the man in 2008. The bottom line is that Green Bay needed a backup and at #56, Brohm was a great selection.

Brohm could have been a top 10 pick in the 2007 draft but went back to school and now he's a Packer.

It's good to know that Brohm has love for the state media already. In the middle of his initial conference call with about 100 members of the Wisconsin media, Brohm said after about two questions, "I gotta go and do and ESPN interview, I'll call you back" and he was gone. It was one of the greatest moments in my 14 years covering the draft in GB.

They had the "Fab Five" at WR but now we'll see how that shakes out when we hear from the Packer GM. Ted Trades Down...

Packers GM Ted Thompson traded the Packers out of the First Round of the NFL Draft. Trader Ted sends the Packers 30th pick to the New York Jets in exchange for the 36th overall selection in the 2nd round and also the 113th pick in the 4th round.....so the wait continues for Packer fans...Isn't the draft fun!

Hurry Up & Wait....

That's is the theme of covering an NFL Draft..especially when the Packers pick late as they do this year at #30 in the draft. Ted Thompson has never traded up...and will most likely trade down, but you still need to be in Green Bay at Draft Headquarters in case something would happen.

That means you show up about 1:30pm, for the start of the draft and then sit and watch the festivities on a big screen in the Packers media auditorium, much like you do at your home. They have both the ESPN and the NFL Network feed up in the room we are in. The NFL Network feed is about 10 seconds behind ESPNs.

What do members of the media do while we wait for the Packers...oh..we also eat! The Packers supply lunch and supper for the media so that's an added bonus! Today's lunch menu was top notch...They had grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, and a really good turkey wrap! Good stuff.....I can't wait for dinner at 6pm....food is always on my mind.

They changed the format a bit for the draft this year so we don't have the marathon first round. Teams only get 10 minutes between picks rather than 15 this year, which is moving things along. We site about 1 hr and 2o minutes in and 11 picks have already been made...that is way better than the old days where sometimes it seemed to take two hours to get throught the top 10.

So, I sit and wait at the draft. The Packers pick 3oth, so that pick should come between 5pm and 6pm...and that is barring a trade....CB, OT, or TE are positions GB could take.

For now, that's it from the Packers Draft.

WASHINGTON (AP) - It's been a taxing year for Americans. A report based on IRS data says that the average taxpayer spent more than a day and over $200 to collect, calculate and compile the numbers for their returns this year. It's even worse for businesses. The report says the corporate cost of filing taxes is about 170 billion dollars. General Electric is one example. In 2006 the company filed returns equal to 24,000 printed pages. The group that compiled the report, the National Taxpayers Union, says Congress, not the IRS, is to blame for the amount of money and time people spend on their taxes. The group says lawmakers are making tax laws more complex, and quicker than the IRS can simplify its forms.

A New Adventure....

Today was my first day as the "official host" of News-Talk 1450 KFIZ's Breakfast Club program which airs from 6am to 9am every weekday morning and also the extended "After Breakfast Program." The program has been the wake up call for many people in Fond du Lac for almost 86 years and many legends have sat in the chair. Legends such as Joe Goeser, Ron Harvey, Doug McGrath are just of few of those that have graced the airwaves at KFIZ over the years. When you talk about KFIZ and some of the great personalities, Jerry St. John, the man I'm replacing, will be right at the top of the list with those men. In a way it's a bitter sweet day because I'm replacing a man who has been hosting the show for 12 years and is a radio icon our community and he's a good friend. Jerry is leaving for various reasons, but they are not health related and he's not retiring so you'll still see him around town. I've hosted the show many times while Jerry was on vacation, but it was different today as I guess I no longer had to say "I'm Wade Bates, filling in for Jerry St. John on the Breakfast Club." Again, I appreciate everything Jerry has done for KFIZ, and I'll do my part to continue to put together a quality show that delivers local news, weather, sports and hopefully a little fun to your morning. Its a huge responsibility to be on in the morning at KFIZ. It's been a staple of Fond du Lac since 1922. I really take pride in the letter K-F-I-Z and what they mean to Fond du Lac and the history of radio. It should be a fun ride, and I would love to have you wake up with me for the next 50 years!
